We bought Hafod y Rhedrwydd back in 1999. \u00a0It had lain half-derelict for quite a few years and, driving past, we had often thought “I wonder…” and “Are you feeling brave?” \u00a0I imagine the previous couple of owners had bought it with the best of intentions but then been put off by the amount of refurbishment it needed – no heating, no hot water, no electricity, woodworm everywhere. \u00a0When we completed and saw the inside there was a “sucking of teeth” – and yes, I did put a foot through the floorboards.<\/p>\n
Over the following year we treated the woodworm, sanded all the woodwork, replastered, rewired and replumbed it; added heating and a kitchen – whilst trying to keep\u00a0the general appearance much as it would have been in the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n
Hafod is 1150 feet above sea level, with no other houses in sight, and surrounded by National Trust land. \u00a0Looking at maps, there seem to be less than a dozen houses as high as this in Wales – we feel it is a special place in which\u00a0you can\u00a0escape from everyday life.<\/p>\n
